An Interview with Ronald P. Chavez, Author of Winds of Wildfire
What is the working title of your book?
Winds of Wildfire
Where did the idea come from for the book?
I live in Taos, New Mexico where three living cultures exist side by side. The Tiwa tribe has been at the same location on their original lands for over 1,000 years. The Spanish have been here since 1598. The American conquest happened in 1848. The idea of weaving a character driven story struck me when I was a volunteer caretaker at Wild Rivers on the Rio Grande Gorge in Taos County. I drew from real people I met for all my characters and from the experience of living in pristine nature and my extensive knowledge of New Mexico history, its customs and traditions.
What genre does your book fall under?
Literary Fiction
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Benjamin Bratt
Madaline Stowe
Johnny Depp
Javier Borden
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
A journey through the life of four characters whose lives have crashed and now are seeking
a better life in a land of three cultures in an ancient land where fate overcomes bigotry and brings a true brotherhood of love into an uncommon show of humanity.
Is your book self-published, published or represented by an agency?
Self published by Create Space
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
A little over one year.
What other books or authors would you compare this story to within your genre? Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls. Steinbeck’s The Pearl and East of Eden, Michener’s Texas.
Who or What inspired you to write this book?
The excitement of complex relationships, the desire to create the sensuous brilliance of the Old West’s offerings, the challenge to go inside a man’s mind, or a woman’s heart or both their souls while facing adversity, the tensions of sexual intrigue, love of the land and the need to find a better life with freedom and joy.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
If you love a story that stirs your imagination and touches your heart and makes you feel you’re there or you identify with one or more of the characters and the story remains in your head and heart, this is the book to read slowly and read it several times.
